If you have ever looked at a psilocybin gummy, maybe one labeled “3mg”, and thought: wait, my capsules say 100mg or 1,000mg, so is this basically nothing?
You are not alone. This is one of the most common points of confusion for new members of our community, and it trips up even experienced practitioners who are used to measuring by grams.
The short answer: gummies and capsules are measuring completely different things. The numbers are not comparable. A 3mg psilocybin gummy is not a weak dose. And a 100mg microdose capsule is not 33 times stronger than a 3mg gummy.
Here is exactly what is going on.
The Two Measurement Systems
Capsules: Dried Mushroom Weight
Capsule preparations, both microdose and macro-dose, are measured by the total weight of dried mushroom fruiting body inside the capsule.
When a label says 100mg, it means 100 milligrams of dried mushroom material. When it says 1,000mg (or 1g), it means one gram of dried mushroom.
The catch: most of that weight is not psilocybin.
Dried mushroom material is mostly inert: chitin (the structural fiber of the mushroom cell wall), proteins, residual water weight, and other compounds. The actual psilocybin alkaloid content of a typical Psilocybe cubensis strain is roughly 0.5% to 1.5% of the dried weight depending on the strain and the batch.
So a 100mg microdose capsule of standard cubensis contains somewhere between 0.5mg and 1.5mg of actual psilocybin. The rest is mushroom.
A 1,000mg macro capsule of the same strain contains roughly 5-15mg of actual psilocybin.
This is why potency varies between strains even at the same weight. A gram of Penis Envy contains significantly more psilocybin than a gram of a standard cubensis variety, which is why experienced practitioners dose differently by strain, not just by weight.
Gummies: Actual Psilocybin Alkaloid (Lab-Tested)
Gummy preparations work completely differently.
Each gummy is manufactured with a precise, lab-verified quantity of psilocybin alkaloid, not mushroom weight. The 1.5mg and 3mg numbers on the label are not a weight of mushroom. They are a direct measurement of the active compound itself, confirmed by third-party laboratory testing.
This means:
- A 1.5mg gummy contains exactly 1.5mg of psilocybin, verified, precise, consistent batch to batch
- A 3mg gummy contains exactly 3mg of psilocybin, same verification
The rest of the gummy weight is the carrier: organic tapioca syrup, pectin, natural flavors, color. None of it is inert mushroom biomass.
So How Do They Compare?
| Format | Label Says | What That Actually Means | Approx. Active Psilocybin |
|---|---|---|---|
| Microdose capsule | 100mg | 100mg dried mushroom | ~0.5-1.5mg psilocybin |
| Macro capsule | 1,000mg (1g) | 1g dried mushroom | ~5-15mg psilocybin |
| Macro capsule | 2,500mg (2.5g) | 2.5g dried mushroom | ~12-37mg psilocybin |
| 1.5mg gummy | 1.5mg | 1.5mg actual psilocybin | 1.5mg psilocybin (exact) |
| 3mg gummy | 3mg | 3mg actual psilocybin | 3mg psilocybin (exact) |
What this shows: a 1.5mg gummy and a 100mg microdose capsule are actually in the same ballpark for active psilocybin content, both sub-perceptual, both appropriate for microdose practice, just measured with completely different systems.
And the 3mg gummy is roughly equivalent in effect to approximately 300-500mg of standard dried mushroom, a genuine dose, not a trace amount.
Why Does the Industry Measure Capsules by Weight?
The short answer is tradition and practicality.
The mushroom community has been measuring by dried weight for decades, long before lab-testing was accessible or affordable. Grams became the universal language: “I took two grams,” “start with one gram,” “three and a half grams is a full ceremony.”
For capsule preparations sold in whole fruiting body form, weight remains the standard. It is a practical and honest measure that the community understands.
Why Do Gummies Measure Differently?
Because gummies can measure differently, and it is more accurate when they do.
To make a gummy, manufacturers don’t just stuff dried mushroom into a chew. They work with extracted or processed mushroom material that gets blended into the gummy formulation. Because that process involves concentration and standardization, it is possible, and far more meaningful, to verify the exact psilocybin content rather than just weigh the input material.
Third-party lab testing measures the actual alkaloid content of the finished product. The result is a precise, reliable, batch-consistent number. What you see on the label is what you get.
This is actually a more precise measurement system for the end product, which is one reason gummies have become valued by practitioners who want more predictability in their experience, particularly at lower doses where small variations in potency matter more.
The Practical Rules to Remember
| Rule 1: Never compare gummy mg to capsule mg directly. They measure different things. 3mg of psilocybin in a gummy is not the same as 3mg of dried mushroom in a capsule. The gummy 3mg is active compound. The capsule 3mg would be a trace of biomass. Rule 2: Gummy doses are meaningful numbers. A 1.5mg gummy at 5 gummies (7.5mg total psilocybin) is a full ceremonial dose. Treat a full gummy package with the same respect you would bring to a macro capsule ceremony. Rule 3: Use the dosing tables for each format separately. Don’t try to convert between systems in your head. The Sacred Strain Catalog has separate dosing tables for gummy and dried preparations. Rule 4: Precision is the gummy’s advantage, use it. Because gummy dosing is precise and lab-verified, it is easier to find your personal dose and repeat it reliably. Particularly valuable for first-time experiences, sensitive individuals, and microdose practice. |
A Note on Our Gummy Strains
Not all of our gummies use Psilocybe cubensis. Two of our 3mg gummy varieties use different species entirely, and the species matters, not just the milligrams.
The Blueberry MIB gummies use Panaeolus cyanescens, a different species known for a more “electric,” visually intense experience compared to cubensis. Even at the same lab-verified 3mg of psilocybin, the character is distinctively different. It is not simply “more potent”. It is a different quality of experience.
The Watermelon gummies use a Panaeolus cyanescens extract, concentrated active alkaloids with inert biomass removed. This changes the character further: faster onset, cleaner arc, less body load, more predictable.
The Cherry gummies use Psilocybe subtropicalis, a rare Mexican species lineage with its own distinct spiritual and emotional character.
The Bottom Line
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| Are gummies weaker because the numbers are smaller? | No. The numbers measure different things. |
| Is a 1.5mg gummy a microdose? | At 1-2 gummies, yes but slightly stronger than a regular microdose. At 3-5, no, full ceremony. |
| Is a 1.5mg gummy comparable to the 100mg microdose capsule? | Roughly, yes, both sub-perceptual microdose territory with the former being slightly more noticeable. |
| Which is more accurate, capsule or gummy dosing? | Gummy. It measures actual alkaloid, not total mushroom weight. |
| Should I dose gummies the same way I dose capsules? | No. Use the psilocybin dosage table in the catalog. |
