I wrote this to address the many questions about which is perhaps one of the most difficult subjects to answer; what does a large dose psychedelic mushroom journey feel like?

First, you’ll come to realize this medicine will provide you the experience you need, not necessarily what you want. But, whatever the experience, the general consensus is that it’s profound and may offer a life changing experience and how you see the world and yourself in it.

This is a general timeline of how a large dose psychedelic mushroom journey unfolds from ingesting to integration to help give you a perspective on what amount of psychedelic mushrooms will give you what type of psychedelic experience, and what a

While the stages I describe reflect what is commonly reported, every experience is personal and can vary widely from one person to the next. The mushroom shows each person something different, because no two human beings carry the same body, memories, fears, hopes, and level of awareness into the journey. The medicine does not simply give an experience—it reveals what is already inside the mind and heart of the one who receives it.

Some people move gently through these stages while others experience rapid shifts or extended peaks.

Safety

Consult your physician before use. Do not take any psychedelic mushrooms if pregnant, nursing, in a negative frame of mind or emotion, operating machinery or a vehicle, or taking any medication including SSRI’s.

If you are taking SSRIs (Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors) — such as Prozac (fluoxetine), Zoloft (sertraline), Lexapro (escitalopram), or Paxil (paroxetine) — you will likely not experience little to any psychedelic effects, as these synthetic medications block or significantly reduce psilocybin’s activity at serotonin receptors in the brain. Simply put, if you are on SSRI’s, or have any diagnosed mental condition or history of mental issues, do not ingest any amount of psychedelics, including psychedelic mushrooms.

Psychedelic Mushroom Dosing Table

One of the most frequently asked questions our members ask about psychedelic mushrooms: What amount of psychedelic mushrooms should I take?

Dosing can vary significantly from person to person. Factors such as height, weight, body chemistry, metabolism, mindset, emotional readiness, medications (including SSRIs), life experience, and prior work with psychedelics all influence how the medicine expresses itself. Even with similar doses, two people can have completely different experiences—and at times, the medicine may offer very little at all if it is not needed. There is no clear scientific explanation for this, which is why many recognize a deeper, experiential intelligence within this natural medicine.

Only you can ultimately decide what amount of mushrooms to take. However, there are some things that may help with your decision. You can do your research, asking others, reviewing anecdotal experiences like this article, and praying and asking for help. Then, as long as you’re safely within the range of physical and mental health, you simply decide the amount to take.

The following ranges are based on a commonly known variety, White Billy (Psilocybe cubensis), where the entire mushroom—stems and caps—is homogenized together to create a balanced and full-spectrum effect.

As always, start small and evaluate the experience, then at some point in another session, stay with the same variety of mushroom and take slightly more and see how that works with your physiology. Remember, this is a spiritual experience and you are building a relationship with psychedelic mushrooms.

Microdose – 50–250mg
A sub-perceptual dose that does not disrupt normal functioning. Many people report increased focus, clarity, creativity, and emotional stability and awareness.

Half dose – 500mg to 1g
A subtle but noticeable shift in mood and body sensation. Light euphoria and giddiness may arise, and those with lower tolerance may begin to notice mild visual changes.

Full dose – 1g to 2g
A full psychedelic experience begins. Body sensations increase, and visual anomalies may appear, such as gentle movement in objects and early geometric patterns, along with heightened sensory awareness.

Deep dose – 2g to 3g
A significantly more immersive experience. You may feel a strong sense of connection with people and nature, psychedelic visuals will be more pronounced, and you’ll experience unfamiliar, esoteric or profound patterns of thought.

Heroic dose – 3g+
A highly intense and transformative experience. This level should be approached with preparation, intention, and experience. You need to have proper support, as the experience can be overwhelming and deeply introspective.

Special Note:
Ceremonial Sacrament dose – 1.5mg

The Church of Psychedelics offers a Ceremonial Sacrament dose that is just above the sub-perceptual Microdose, but just below the perceptual Half dose. This dose is intentionally designed to support our members in our spiritual ceremonies and mindfulness practices, offering a balanced and grounded experience that enhances awareness without overwhelming the system and remaining functional and present. You may feel spiritually open, uplifted, and clear-headed, with a natural pull toward introspection and deeper emotional understanding. The experience often carries a steady, grounded onset with nuanced emotional depth, subtle euphoria, and, at higher levels, visually intricate textures and geometric patterns that support reflection rather than distraction.

Ordering Psychedelic Mushroom

Here are some things that require consideration when thinking about taking a high dose of psychedelic mushrooms:

Preparation:

  • Ingest the sacrament on an empty stomach; don’t eat ~3 hours before ingesting. As you continue to work with the medicine, having a constant like this helps you learn how to work with the medicine more effectively.
  • Do not mix with opioids or depressants like alcohol.
  • Do not mix with cannabis during your psychedelic journey. If you feel the need for cannabis, then wait at least 2 hours after you peak with the mushrooms.
  • Set. Setting. Intent. –– create a set and setting that feels safe, calm, and comfortable, because your mindset and environment strongly influence how a psychedelic experience unfolds. When you are in a peaceful space with people and surroundings you trust, your mind can relax and explore the experience without unnecessary fear or distraction.
    • Intent – A special note about ‘intent’: before the sacrament is received, ask yourself: What issues am I genuinely bringing to this experience? What am I honestly willing to look at? What am I honestly asking to understand? You don’t need a perfect answer. But arriving with a question opens the door. Arriving with no awareness at all leaves you at the mercy of whatever is already churning beneath the surface.
  • What set and setting is best for your psychedelic / spiritual experience? Whatever provides the highest level of safety for your level of experience and sensory thresholds. The “set” is your mindset, and the “setting” is your environment.
  • Your mindset and the baseline control you have with your imagination will give you some insight into what type of experience you may have. Psychedelic Mushrooms, taken as a sacrament, will open portals and doorways of your thoughts, feelings, emotions and profound understandings…this is the blessing, only you know if you’re prepared to receive it. Only you are responsible for you.
  • Time and space will be altered with higher doses, and your balance may be much more off than you feel. Therefore, use the restroom and get all your needs and responsibilities finished before ingesting; do not overestimate your actual ability to balance. Greatly limit your mobility until you experience different doses.
  • At high doses psilocybin may present with sensual thoughts and aphrodisiac qualities on the early side of the peak. Keep this in mind as it relates to any preparation or setting of boundaries, or any discussions about this that needs to be had.
  • Consider if you need a trip sitter, and have ready any phone numbers you may need like the Fireside Project (https://firesideproject.org/) or someone you can talk with in an altered state in case you need help or a steady voice while you’re going through a deep experience.
  • Similarly, deep feelings and thoughts will arise, so prepare yourself with what you need, and account for how you deal with deep feelings and thoughts.

Guidance:

  • Trust your instinct and intuition; if you feel doubt then doubt means don’t. You know yourself better than anyone else and you do not need to ingest the mushroom in order for the mushroom to already be guiding you back to who you really are. Simply having the bravery to be open to the experience of a psychedelic journey is a big step in anyone’s spiritual journey.
  • Before you ingest the mushroom sacrament, answer these questions for yourself and evaluate the answer:
    • If you trust: “Why do I trust what I’m about to do?”
    • If you don’t trust: “What don’t I trust about what I’m thinking of doing?”
    • Whatever the answer; what you do is up to you – you are a sovereign human being and you have the right to explore your spirituality in whatever way and experience is best for you. So be smart about it, and become a student of the medicine and endeavor to sincerely learn about it.
  • You are not “using” this medicine – that’s colonizer / capitalist thinking that we have to reframe – you are building a relationship with a plant medicine teacher. Evaluate what this means to you. If you can’t get in this space, then consider not ingesting this psychedelic sacrament until you know a relationship with this plant medicine teacher is your intention.
  • Working with plant medicine can be medicinal, recreational, therapeutic, spiritual or ceremonial. A core element of plant medicines is they help bring balance. However, Doug Red Hail is of the belief that what’s crucial and of utmost importance is that you approach this relationship from a place of intention, respect, honor and relationship.
  • You can always take more, but you can’t take less.
  • Taking more does not give you clout or aura, that kind of attitude will come with consequences and lessons you may not be ready for. Know your level, and honor and respect it – start with a low-dose and build your way up. Remember, the intention of learning from entheogenic (i.e., nature-based) psychedelics is to laugh, learn, remember, and heal.
  • When your intention is to build a relationship with the medicine, any dose will give you a valuable experience, so don’t be in a hurry to go big or go home.
  • Prayer is a conversation with the universe. Pray your intentions and thoughts with the sacrament. Ask for protection and kindness, but not at the expense of any lessons that will help you develop in a good way.

The Journey Begins:

INGESTION: Minute 1

It’s normal to feel both excited and nervous.

Turn the aimless energy of excitement into enthusiasm by sitting with the intent of what you’re doing and why.

Invite God the Creator, your ancestors and your angels/guides to help and guide you with this experience.

Check in with your mindset and make sure you are in a good place and aligned with your intention for this experience.

Make sure you have everything you need as you don’t want to be up and moving around if possible after the first 15-minutes.

ONSET: 15 to 45 minutes

The effects begin to present in a noticeable way.

  • The shift begins:
    • The medicine is alchemizing: your mind, body and spirit are waking up and the gates are opening.
    • The medicine is metabolizing: the psilocybin is metabolizing into psilocyn.
    • Serotonin is beginning to increase; racing or anxious thoughts are beginning to subside or may be altogether absent at this time, and you are sensing a noticeable shift in your general awareness.
    • Now is the time to check in with your mindset and form your mood with good energy.
    • Check in with anyone else you may be doing this with to let them know you’re noticing the shifts – it’s okay to communicate with each other, but keep the conversation very sparse and light – each of you is having a very personal experience and you need to respect the other person going through that experience in their mind without other people’s chatter or distractions.
    • If music is a part of this journey, and there are other people, consider separate earpods or headphones – music can alter or enhance the experience and not everyone vibes with the same music. The same goes for anything that you decide to watch. Get a consensus with others before you introduce any music or video to the experience and atmosphere – be mindful of the environment that music and video can create during this sacred experience.
    • At this time, be settled into your set and setting. Remember, your spatial awareness will be shifting and you must be extremely careful because you will feel fully functional, but you need time to get your sea-legs under you, so to speak. Hold on to things if you need to get up, but at this point make sure you are settling in and prepared to remain in the same contained area for the journey.
  • Your awareness begins to notice that multiple senses are increasing at the same time.
    • Your mind begins to shimmer as dormant areas of your brain begin to awaken.
    • You begin to feel sensations on your skin because your neurotransmitters are activating and your senses are increasing.
    • Your body begins to tingle, and you may notice that you’re touching your face, arms and legs.
    • You may feel yourself tensing up and releasing your jaw and other areas of your body – again, it’s because you’re becoming aware of your body as your senses become heightened. All of this is normal.
  • You might feel nervous, because these sensations are new or have not been felt for a long time. That’s okay, just breathe slowly and deep in through the nose and out through the mouth – this helps to balance your sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous system and helps you relax into the experience.
  • Remember, millions and millions of people have done this for hundreds of thousands of years. You cannot overdose and this is not addictive.
  • It is very important to keep a positive and uplifted mindset because your thoughts and mindset will shape your experience.
  • Trust this plant medicine teacher, and trust yourself.
  • Relax, relax, relax. You’re in for an interesting ride, but everything is going to be okay.

COME-UP: 45 minutes to 1.25 hr

You may experience intense physiological (mind – body – spirit) sensations, esoteric thoughts, deep feelings and psychedelic visuals.

Depending on the variety and dosage amount of psychedelic mushrooms ingested, you may feel one, a few, or a combination of the following:

  • You’ll begin to notice visuals:
    • surfaces expanding and contracting like a breathing motion.
    • you may see things in a color spectrum like putting on glasses with tinted lenses.
    • fractals and geometric patterns become noticeable – if you don’t see these with your eyes open, then close your eyes and ask the medicine to show you anything you’re meant to see, then relax and allow your mind to see without your eyes.
    • The visuals are often subtle and patterned (breathing surfaces, color shifts, geometry) and are not nearly as exaggerated as movies or artwork portray – you’re not typically seeing chaotic or cartoonish hallucinations like objects coming to life, mushrooms with eyes, or things talking to you; those depictions are largely artistic interpretation, and not the standard experience.
  • Feeling of oneness with humanity. This is the time to be mindful that building a relationship with universal consciousness is part of the experience. You don’t have to do anything in particular except to notice it, as this will naturally occur in many journeys.

From this point forward your balance will be unstable for the next few hours, so be extremely careful moving around – don’t let an unnecessary fall create a bad experience.

THE UNFOLDING: 1.25 hours to 2 hours

Your thoughts, feelings, and senses begin a profound unfolding, granting conscious access to the deep inner landscapes that are rarely seen or contemplated.

Psychedelic visuals may begin intensifying. Music and light will impact emotional states. As you settle into this stage you may be open to socializing and discussion, but keep the conversation very light and upbeat to keep your mindset in a good place. This medicine will enhance and amplify what is in your mindset and heartspace. Remember, you are about to peak after this and things are going to get psychedelic.

Be very gentle with yourself at this stage, you may be having intense thoughts, feelings and realizations. At the same time, consciousness (the kingdom of god within) is gradually moving into the space of your awareness (your everyday reality) and this particular experience can come with the unsettling feeling that comes along with allowing yourself to let go and sink into this big, new, unfamiliar experience.

  • Your consciousness is beginning to embody your mind, body and spirit.
  • There’s a sense of weightlessness as you drift through your own mind.
  • Profound realizations arrive and depart one after another.

PEAK: 2 to 4 hours

You’ve arrived.

This is where you begin to see yourself and the world around you through the lens of your heart and the mind of the cosmos.

An understanding of your place in humanity and the feeling of oneness with the Universe. The veil between your awareness and consciousness is thin and you’re able to see through to the other side.

Euphoric feelings, vibrant colors, heavy body load, psychedelic visuals, ego dissolves and feelings of cosmic unity, your psychic senses may be available.

You laugh. You cry. You understand.

  • LET GO.
  • TRUST.
  • ALLOW.
  • LISTEN.
  • LEARN.
  • SURRENDER TO THE GOD WITHIN.

Panic and Anxiety:

It is totally normal to panic or get scared – this is a big, new experience and you may not feel in control as your divine mind is in a tug-of-war with your nervous system and a lifetime of mind-control and propaganda.

You are now in the realm where the essence of all potential lives. You can ask yourself anything that you desire to know. Will those answers come? That’s up to you and the medicine. And if the answers do come, they will forever change you for the better. Remember, it’s about building a relationship with this plant medicine teacher.

When you receive a powerful message or lesson, thank the medicine and ask for more. Gratitude is key to receiving profound insights and understandings.

When you choose to take a large dose you are accepting that you may not be able to control what arises – you are stepping into an experience that will unfold on its own terms – not yours. Your role is not to control it, but to stay present and allow this experience to move through you and unfold as it needs to. You must accept this or you may suffer a bad experience.

If the feelings are too much, ask the medicine to be gentle, to slow down and help you find comfort and calm. Remember and understand that your mind, body and spirit are all interconnected and highly activated so you just have to mind-over-matter the big feelings and relax into the experience. Your body will eventually process all the compounds of the medicine and you will gradually return to your normal baseline self.

The River Analogy:

“A big psychedelic experience is like being dropped into a powerful fast-moving river.”

  • If you try to swim upstream, fight the current, and control every movement…
you will panic, you will exhaust yourself, and you will feel like you’re drowning.
  • BUT, if you turn onto your back and float, the river carries you..
You still feel the power of the water — but it becomes an experience instead of a battle. It’s then that the river disappears altogether and you’re in the present moment and intimately connected with your genuine self and the medicine.

In many teachings about psychedelics, the mind is described as a river of thoughts and emotions constantly flowing, and the goal is not to control it but to learn to float within it.

Remember: Fighting the river feels like drowning. Floating in the river feels like traveling.

In other words…

In psychedelic work, letting go, surrendering, and allowing – is not “giving up” — it’s intentionally letting go of rigid control and allowing the experience to unfold.

Paradoxically:

  • Trying to control everything → anxiety and panic
  • Letting the experience move through you → insight and transformation

At some point in your relationship with this medicine, over time you will come to the understanding that you are the river, and you’ll laugh about it. When that happens – WELCOME! – you’re now in the club 🙂

Common advice that has been offered to thousands of people going through this same experience:

“Trust. Let go. Be open.”

If you’re having an experience that’s too big or scary and you did not prepare for it, just know that you are going to be okay and you are not going to die. When your journey is over, you will understand why people refer to this stage as when “ego-death” happens.

Why it can feel frightening:

Your ego provides you a sense of psychological control and stability. In other words, your ego is in place to provide you a sense of safety even though nothing is under control. And that, in itself, can be very scary to people living in this modern world but separated by generations from their direct relationship with nature and the cosmos.

So when the ego begins dissolving, the mind may react with thoughts like:

  • “Something is wrong.”
  • “I’m losing myself.”
  • “I’m dying.”

Again, you’re not dying, you’re just seeing the world and your place in the world without the filter of your ego. The ego that’s been developing your entire life to “keep you safe.” The ego that’s hyper vigilant to make meaning out of every little thought that crosses your mind. The ego that’s constantly whispering in your ear, “what’s in it for me?”

Psychedelic mushrooms place your ego in the background, loosening the part of you that normally filters reality and maintains control. This happens because psilocybin reduces activity in the default mode network (DMN), including the medial prefrontal cortex and posterior cingulate cortex, while increasing connectivity across the brain. In other words, the part of your brain that keeps your sense of “self” stable quiets down, and other parts communicate more freely. Without that filter, you may experience a sense of connection to everything, which can feel expansive, but also overwhelming, because your usual sense of control is no longer there.

You may also experience a temporary dissolution of your identity. It can feel like your old self is dying, but you are not dying. Your mind is reorganizing how it understands who you are. The process can be intense, but it creates the opportunity for something more aligned to emerge.

THE COMEDOWN: 4 to 5 hours

Senses are still amplified, but the visuals / hallucinations become mild.

A profound sense of gratitude washes in and out of your thoughts.

You feel like your head and heart just took a huge cleansing breath.

Your appetite returns and your legs become steady underneath you.

This is an optimal time to meditate, do breathwork, or journal your thoughts and feelings… and PRAY.

Stay away from technology during this time.

Take this time for yourself …

RETURNING TO BASELINE: 5 to 6 hour mark

Effects are now mild or no longer present, the heart is soft and the mind is expanded, and a deep sense of well-being and emotional peace is present.

The world around you feels a little unfamiliar because it is now more sacred to you than ever.

Time to sleep.

INTEGRATION: Hours, Days, and Weeks After

This is the true alchemy.

The journey itself opens the door — integration is how you implement the experience into your everyday life.

In the hours, days, and weeks after your experience, you begin the real work of reflecting on what you saw, felt, and understood. Integration is the process of making meaning from the experience and bringing those insights into your everyday life. Without integration, even a profound journey can slowly fade back into memory instead of becoming a real transformation.

 After the Journey

The journey itself is not the transformation, but it creates the conditions for one. In the hours and days that follow, your mind is uniquely open – a condition called ‘neuroplasticity.” This is a window of time when old beliefs loosen. Patterns that felt permanent begin to feel moveable. This window doesn’t last forever, so how you spend it matters enormously.

Your mind and emotions may be unusually open and sensitive. Some people feel peaceful and grateful, while others feel raw, reflective, or emotionally stirred. This is normal.

Give yourself time to land gently.

  • Drink water and eat clean nourishing food.
  • Rest your body and allow your nervous system to settle.
  • Avoid heavy conversations or major decisions in the immediate hours after the journey.
  • Spend quiet time in nature, meditation, journaling, prayer, or silence.

This period is about stability and grounding, not analysis.

In the Days That Follow

Insights from the journey may continue to unfold.

Integration looks different for every person — for some it is journaling and prayer; for others it is breathwork, creative expression, movement, or finding a community of people who understand what a journey like this opens.

To support integration:

  • Journal what you experienced, even small details or emotions.
  • Meditate or pray to revisit the insights that arose.
  • Talk with someone you trust who understands altered states or spiritual experiences.
  • Protect your peace — limit alcohol, media overload, and chaotic environments for a few days.

Your mind may still be processing the experience, and giving it space helps the insights deepen rather than disappear.

In the Weeks After

Integration is not just remembering what happened — it is living differently because of it.

Ask yourself:

  • What truth did I see about myself?
  • What habits or patterns did the journey reveal?
  • What changes in my life would honor what I learned?

Then take small real actions that reflect those insights.

This could mean:

  • repairing a relationship
  • changing unhealthy habits
  • spending more time in nature
  • developing a daily spiritual practice
  • aligning your life with deeper values

Lasting transformation happens when the insights you experienced become embodied choices, responses and behaviors, not just powerful memories.

Remember

The experience itself may last only a few hours.

But integration can last a lifetime.

This is how the sacred becomes part of everyday life.

This is how a journey becomes wisdom.

SUMMARY:

A psychedelic mushroom journey unfolds in recognizable stages –– from ingestion and onset, through the come-up, unfolding, and peak, and finally into the comedown and return to baseline. While these stages are commonly reported, every experience is deeply personal and shaped by the individual’s physiology, mindset, life history, and environment. The medicine amplifies awareness and opens the inner landscape of thoughts, feelings, memories, and realizations. At higher doses the experience can feel immense and unfamiliar, sometimes bringing moments of fear as the ego loosens its grip on control. The key guidance throughout the journey is simple but powerful: relax, trust the process, and allow the experience to unfold. Fighting the experience often creates anxiety, while surrendering to it allows the journey to become a meaningful exploration rather than a struggle.

“Transformation does not happen during the medicine journey.

However, it will show you where transformation needs to happen.

The transformation is up to you.”

~ Doug Red Hail Pineda

The journey itself may last only a few hours. But integration can last a lifetime. And it is in the integration — not the peak — where the sacrament fully delivers its medicine. This is how the sacred becomes part of everyday life. This is how a journey becomes wisdom.

Integration is the process of reflecting on what was seen and understood and bringing those insights into everyday life through thoughtful action and personal growth. Practices such as journaling, meditation, breathwork, prayer, spending time in nature, and joining a trusted community of people can help clarify the lessons of the journey.

Without integration, even profound experiences can fade into memory; with integration, the insights can reshape habits, relationships, and perspective. In this way, the psychedelic journey becomes more than an experience — it becomes a process of learning, healing, and transformation.
